Battlelords of the 23rd Century Scenario

Statues

These giant sacrificial statues serve as an integral part of an ancient ceremony that may well be as old as time itself. For it is said to have been created by the Old Ones and other Unnameable Beings. In the myths and legends of Earth this ceremony survived as a parallel in 'the wicker man' of pagan mythos. However the true knowledge, significance and purpose of this ceremony was long forgotten by man before even the second age of magic had began on Earth.

The residents of the statues are sacrificed at times of power, mystically burned alive from within by the enchanted blood that they are covered in, and is coursing through their bodies and seeping out of them.  This blood is then infusing with blood from other victims, pulling the bodies and souls together. The results of the ritual vary based on the size and shape of the sacrificial statue, the number and nature of souls offered up and the levels of mystical energy used.

The greatest of these constructs, filled with dozens of supernatural sacrificial species and the ritual conducted by a cardinal lord (so far not participated in the rituals done in the Metro Underground) creates a monstrous demonic creature from the charred, blood-soaked remnants of the inhabitants. In ancient times animals and mortals may have been sacrificed in such a manner to create the multitude of unions of "human and beast" creatures found mentioned throughout history in ancient text.  Were the Centaurs, Pegasus and Minotaurs and other sentient species including Man given birth first by this method by the Unnameable Beings?

GM Note: There is a chance that this ritual has created a new species or two and it maybe found in the tunnel networks. The possibilities are endless. The ritual will have to be replicated several times to get a potentially viable population of a new species. These will make good random encounters in the labyrinth of tunnels, as well as take the scenario in different direction and it may an unexpected element to the scenario.

Generally with this ritual you end up with a mindless monstrosity running lose in the tunnel networks in incredible pain, lashing out at anything that comes near it. Not a good thing to encounter when exploring the tunnel network to run into. Many of these things will die in seconds or minutes, but some may survive for months, or even longer before they die.

The most likely to survive are going to be "animal intelligence" level creatures that are an amalgamation of two or more species. These things will survive until they are killed in the tunnels somewhere. They will acquire a lair and have a hunting area they patrol for unwanted visitors.

If there is a particular "amalgam" that appears to have potential, then attempts are made to replicate their creation, to see if a viable population can be created. These attempts are presided over by the more powerful blood druids. Some of these attempts may well have succeeded.
